Client Challenge: To implement facility improvements at Western Hills Elementary School per the West Des Moines Community School District 10 Year Facility Master Plan. The existing 73,000 square foot building was constructed in 1967, with subsequent additions in 1971 and 1987. The project required new mechanical, electrical and life safety systems and major renovation of all areas within the existing building. The plan also called for a two story building addition to support new mechanical equipment and provide additional storage capacity.
SVPA Solution: Working with district-wide standards and a long-range facilities plan designed to bring older buildings in the district up to current standards, the design team provided a solution to meet both infrastructure and program needs. New HVAC systems and electrical/technology improvements were provided throughout the school. The renovation provided colorful new interior finishes throughout. All existing areas received new carpet or vinyl tile floor covering, new paint on the walls, and new acoustic tile ceilings. New built-in millwork was included in each of the classrooms. A minor building addition of approximately 2,000 square feet was constructed for maintenance and mechanical equipment needs. The renovation also addressed the building envelope through scheduled roof replacement, masonry tuck pointing, and window replacements.
