Blank Performing Arts Center Addition and Renovation
Simpson College
Indianola, Iowa

Challenge: This 480-seat theater with associated stage, lobbies, offices, classrooms and miscellaneous support spaces, was built in 1968/69. In addition to theater instruction and other performance learning activities taught in the building, each summer the regional opera company - Des Moines Metro Opera - performs three operas for audiences over several weeks in June and July.

SVPA Solution: The addition involves a two-story expansion to the south of the existing facility. The addition provides for theater departmental faculty offices, classrooms and teaching laboratories. Connecting the addition to the existing building is a two-story lobby space for theater patrons to mingle during intermissions, as well as an area for pre and post- performance events. New handicapped accessible restrooms will be added on both floors adjacent to the lobby for patrons and student use. The exterior materials have been selected to compliment the existing building’s concrete and glass exterior, as well as add a contemporary look. The new addition uses a variety of materials to bring about a more human scale and a warmer feeling. Materials used to construct the addition consist of concrete, buff-colored limestone panels, white colored aluminum panels and glass.
