Iowa Soybean Association
Ankeny, Iowa

Client Challenge: Design a new headquarters for this soybean promotion, advocacy, research, education, and outreach organization. Create a design that represents the Iowa farmers who comprise the Board of Directors and the mission of the Iowa Soybean Association.

SVPA Solution: The exterior features red brick and limestone to recall the red barns of Iowa and the limestone foundations one often sees. The grain-bin like entrance clearly identifies the building's agricultural mission.

The interior of the grain bin also acts as the building's main rotunda, providing large, naturally-lit space for staff and visitors. New offices, lab and work spaace, training rooms, and a board room are included. Soy-based materials such as insulation, carpet backing, and adhesives were used in construction.

Sustainable Design Techinques:

  • Geothermal heating and cooling system
  • Natural daylight into all spaces of the building, with high-efficiency glazing to manage solor heat gain
  • White roof material reduces heat absorption on the roof, reducing "heat island" effects
  • All storm water runoff from the parking areas and the building is managed through bio-retention cells and water quality volume basins, which slows, cools, and filters storm water before it enters the municipal storm water system
