Des Moines Fire Station No. 1
Des Moines, Iowa

Challenge: To make a connection to the existing fire station, with the incorporation of the existing medallions being recreated or relocated into the new building's façade.

SVPA Solution: The Des Moines Fire Station No. 1 project is located on Mulberry Street, just west of 13th Street, directly west of the Nationwide Parking Ramp. The building consists of a two-story administration and living quarters, and a six-bay apparatus area. The design utilizes limestone and brick masonry, glazed aluminum curtainwall and architectural metal panels. Mechanical equipment will be located in the building, so roof top equipment will be minimal in size, and not require screening.

Sustainable Design Techniques: The project incorporates a number of sustainable features and is LEED Certified. The project also uses Mid-American Energy’s CustomPlus incentive program. Daylighting strategies were incorporated as part of the design with Mid-American’s assistance. The design also utilizes a Geothermal heating/cooling system.
