Camp Mitigwa Reception Plaza
Mid-Iowa Council, Boy Scouts of America
Boone, Iowa

Client Challenge: Camp Mitigwa is a year-round training, mentoring, and instruction facility located on 450 acres overlooking the Des Moines River. SVPA's challenge was to create a reception plaza adjacent to the existing dining hall that reflects the basic tenants of what it is to be a Boy Scout.

SVPA Solution: The existing 60-year old dining hall inspired the color palette and gave diretion on materials. The woodsy, organic nature of the site directed the design to be represented by a chilton flagstone patio with a concrete divider strip at the perimeter in an irregular shape to reflect the nature of the flagstone. 12 natural fracture limestone boulders were placed around the patio with one part of the Scout Law on each. A single boulder, placed in the middle of the patio, has a four-point compass engraved on the top.
