Des Moines Fire Station No. 1
Des Moines, Iowa

Project Description:

  • The Des Moines Fire Station #1 project will be located on Mulberry Street, just west of 13th Street, directly west of the Nationwide Parking Ramp.
  • The building will consist of a two-story administration and living quarters, and a five bay apparatus area. The project is also considering an alternate for a sixth bay.
  • The current design proposes the use of limestone and brick masonry, glazed aluminum curtainwall, and architectural metal panels. Wall structure consists of perimeter bearing walls and internal non-bearing walls primarily are concrete masonry units. Floor structure consists of steel beam framing and concrete/metal floor decking. Roof structure consists of metal roof joists and decking. The roof structure consists of TPO low-slope roofs and standing seam metal roofs for the arched roof elements.
  • The new station’s design is attempting to make a connection to the existing station with the incorporation of the existing medallions being re-created or relocated into the new building’s facade. Incorporation of the existing building’s cornerstone/memorial stone into a new base for the flagpole is also being proposed. Mechanical equipment will be located in the building, so roof top equipment will be minimal in size, and not require screening.
  • The project has been through an informal review process with the City Planning Department, and the current design reflects changes that have been recommended by them in an effort to deal with existing zoning requirements.
  • The project will incorporate a number of sustainable features and will be LEED Certified . The project will also use Mid-American Energy’s CustomPlus incentive program. Daylighting strategies are being incorporated as part of the design with Mid-American’s assistance. The design is currently planning for Geothermal heating/cooling system.
