Vermeer Yellow Iron Academy

Vermeer Manufacturing wanted to provide an on-site early learning center for their employees’ children. The site the company selected was where the original Vermeer family farm was located. The design team was asked to create a state-of-the-art, environmentally responsible facility that honored the farm heritage of the Vermeer family.

Our Solution

The center’s design pays homage to the Vermeer family farm, with its red barn appearance and metal silos. The Owner challenged SVPA to create a learning environment that at a young age would encourage STEM concepts and provide a safe, unique and comfortable environment for children. The facility houses young children from infant to early school age. The design incorporates metal silos that are used as movement matters zones, where little ones have access to mirrors and recessed LED lighting in the walls on the first floor and a science lab with views of the sky on the second floor. The metal siding was left exposed in some classrooms to provide curious minds a new texture to touch and feel. Color changing LED lighting and ceiling clouds were used in some classrooms to provide a calming environment during quiet times. Vinyl plank tile with a weathered wood look was used as well as natural maple and other neutral colors. Accent colors were used according to age group and help provide wayfinding throughout the facility.
