Grimes Public Safety Center

The City of Grimes was in need of a new fire station to replace their existing non-operational facility and the growing needs of the City of Grimes. Currently, Grimes is served through a joint fire district with the City of Johnston. The new station will be located on the west side of the city in a newly developed area.

The station includes a four-bay apparatus storage with extended bays of 90 feet depth. The design includes an open kitchen day room to the sleeping areas and visual access to the apparatus bay. The facility houses eight individual sleeping rooms. Decontamination areas were carefully designed to mitigate the transference of carcinogens from the apparatus bay to the living areas though pressurization and vestibules. The station also includes a mezzanine for training purposes, storage and mechanical spaces. The building also provides an office space for the sheriff’s department. The design of the apparatus bay and associated services utilizing precast concrete panels and the living area with a conventional steel frame with brick masonry. A clerestory of translucent panels provides an abundance of natural light to the apparatus bay.
