Altoona Fire Station No. 26
The growing City of Altoona was in need of a new satellite station to be located on the NW side of the city to better serve the growing industrial development in the area. Amongst precast concrete warehouses, the station has been designed to fit into the existing context while also providing a respite for staff that are not readily connected to other conveniences. With that in mind and the growing need to provide spaces to support staff’s physical and psychological well-being after traumatic incidences, the station incorporated an outdoor courtyard accessible from the kitchen and dayroom with large amounts of natural light to connect to the outside. The courtyard can be used for outdoor athletic activities and socializing.

Our Solution
The station includes a four-bay apparatus storage and eight individual sleeping rooms. Decontamination areas were carefully designed to mitigate the transference of carcinogens from the apparatus bay to the living areas though pressurization and vestibules. The station also includes a mezzanine for training purposes, storage and mechanical spaces. The project will be constructed utilizing the new CMaR procurement process.
A successful fire station design balances vision with practicality. When architects listen closely to firefighters, city leaders, and the community, the result is a facility that meets operational goals and stays true to fiscal responsibility. SVPA achieved this through active listening — engaging with all stakeholders to ensure the design reflects the operational, functional, and budgetary goals of everyone involved.
